It helped the filmmaker see a way to walk the line between emotionally grounded storytelling and breaking a long overdue barrier for LGBTQ representation. She was especially taken with the idea that Phastos - an ageless alien who came to Earth 7,000 years ago to help guide human civilization through his powers of invention - rediscovers his long lost faith in humanity through finding Ben and starting a family. The day after the premiere, director Chloé Zhao explained that Phastos’ husband and family were already baked into Marvel Studios’ conception of the character when she first began discussing making the film with the studio. I wish! Can you imagine how many lives this is going to be saving - kids, young queer folk, who are being bullied, committing suicide, and not seeing themselves being represented? And now they get to see this - it’s above and beyond.” “I wish I had that when I was a kid to see this. Grace Petrie is on tour until Sunday 29 May review from Summerhall, Edinburgh, Sunday 14 November.“Beyond a dream come true, it’s life-saving,” the actor told Variety.

But yes, despite all that, it's safe to say we wanted longer in Grace Petrie's wonderful company. The latter of which she describes to younger audience members as being written about Theresa May 'back when we thought things couldn't get any worse' (cue huge knowing laugh).Ī few unexpected treats come in the form of Moss' own fox-inspired song, 'Bold Reynard' an ode to the arrival of Petrie's niece Ivy whom she raced straight from a Glastonbury stage to greet in the maternity ward and a cover of Celine Dion's It's All Coming Back To Me Now' (yes, you read that right) which Petrie and Moss included in their 'A-Z of covers' project during lockdown. Grace Petrie enchants her Summerhall crowdĪbly accompanied by the equally talented (and funny) multi-instrumentalist Ben Moss, Petrie creates a kind of pick 'n' mix from her back-catalogue: 'Storm To Weather', 'We've Got An Office In Hackney', 'The Last Man On Earth', 'Haul Away', 'The Losing Side' and 'Some Days Are Worse Than Others' from her excellent new album Connectivity 'On The Road To BC' from 2017's Heart First Aid Kit and, of course, a couple of classics from 2018's Queer As Folk in 'Black Tie' and 'Farewell To Welfare'.

Those unoffended (ie all of us) lap up the songs and sentiments which bounce, without friction, between politics and romance. But then as Petrie points out several times during the gig, 'if you're offended by that, this probably isn't the place for you'.

Not the serious bits about transphobia and hatred, but pretty much everything else wins a chuckle, usually at the expense of right-wing nasties. What people may not expect is to find yourself laughing at almost ever word she says. Those already familiar with her music (judging by the singalongs that's most of this crowd) know to expect sharp, snappy lyrics, fine musicianship and a vocal style that feels like a shout wrapped in a fleece blanket. Not because she hadn't entertained us sufficiently, sung enough songs or given enough chat there's just something about Petrie that leaves you peckish for more of what she's serving. Politics and romance meet in a stirring live set from a singer-songwriter whose protest songs are accompanied by surprise cover versions and crowd-pleasing humourĪ promise to come back soon was the only thing that saved Grace Petrie from leaving her audience unfulfilled.
